Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of Low Back Pain

What is Lumbago?

 

Low back pain happens when a person has pain in the lumbar region, ie in the lower region of the spine near the basin. It is also known as “lumbago”, “backache”, “kidney pain” or “pain in the rooms.” It is not a disease, is a type of pain that may have different causes, some complex. However, in most cases, the problem is not serious. Sometimes the pain radiates to the legs with or without numbness.

 

Causes

 

Often, the problem is postural, ie caused by a bad position to sit, lie down, get down on the floor or carry some heavy object. Other times, low back pain can be caused by inflammation, infection, herniated disc, slipping vertebra, osteoarthritis (degenerative process of a joint) and even emotional problems.

 

Types

 

There are the types of low back pain: acute and chronic. The acute form is the “bad way.” The pain is strong and appears suddenly after a physical effort. Occurs in the younger population. The chronic form usually occurs in older, the pain is not as intense, but it is almost permanent.

 

Diagnosis of Low Back Pain

 

It is not always necessary to do tests such as MRI. In more than 90% of the time, the diagnosis and the cause is established with a good talk with the patient and a physical examination done well. In case of doubt, the next step is plain radiography. Densitometry is a test used in osteoporosis, but osteoporosis does not cause pain. What hurts is the spontaneous fracture of a vertebra weakened by osteoporosis. Therefore, in most cases, the density is not necessary in cases of lumbago.

 

Treatment

 

In acute low back pain, exercise is totally contraindicated. One must make absolute rest in bed. An alternative is to lie on your side in the fetal position (with legs tucked). Are not indicated in the acute phase: traction, handling, RPG, exercise, stretching and massage.
